Xavi says ‘no’ to Pep [x]
“This summer, Pep Guardiola made a bid for Xavi Hernandez to play for Bayern Munich and was greeted with a response of a resounding no and and a clear reason: Xavi was never willing to sign for any rival of Barça in Europe, discarding all Spanish options as well.
From the moment that Xavi wondered if his time at Barça was done, there were many clubs that were put on alert - not only from MLS clubs or Qatar. At 34, his image was still important and many calls followed. Two of the calls were top teams and both directed by two former ‘blaugranas’: Louis Van Gaal and Pep Guardiola.
As revealed by Mundo Deportivo, Louis Van Gaal, had first offered Xavi an alternative to Barca - joining Manchester United - but he failed to convince him.
After, he recieved a call from former player and former coach of FC Barcelona, Pep Guardiola - who, last season, fished in his former club for Thiago Alcántara. This time, the call was for Xavi Hernandez - a call that happened before Guardiola became interested Xabi Alonso. Guardiola personally tried to convince Xavi to leave for Bayern, but he failed in that attempt. Xavi made it very clear to Guardiola that he would never be willing to play against Barcelona in the Champions League and immediately refused, discarding even the offer of a starting position on the first team if he left the club.
Xavi insisted that if there was a departure, it would be to an Arabic club or to play football in the United States - away from the big leagues and avoiding any possibility of facing his club [Barcelona] someday. From then, another former blaugrana player contacted him - Michael Laudrup, Qatar Lekhwiya coach, who offered him €12 million. El Arabi, Al Saad, El Jaish and other Qatari clubs also contacted Barcelona, as well as a voice from the Major League Soccer (MLS) club in New York City.
But finally, Xavi Hernandez backtracked on his decision to leave his club and decided he wanted to stay, even if it meant losing ground in the team.”
